Final Military Honors

Yorba Linda, CA. -- 11 March 2006

It's raining. It's cold. It's 0800HRS, Saturday morning 11Mar2006, at the Pope John Paul Center in Yorba Linda, 7 blocks from the President Nixon's Library, where 3 Op Teams (27 members) of the 9th Regional Command, UNITED STATES VOLUNTEERS - JOINT SERVICES COMMAND, stand in attention to prepare for the Final Military Honors to a deceased Special Forces soldier, SFC Edwin Chacon, who died a couple of weeks earlier in the line of duty in Iraq.  SFC Chacon spent his life to defend our country and our flag, and he's is our hero.

It's 1100HRS. The Pope John Paul Center priest completes his spiritual service.  The priest hand carries the cremation urn and walks along side the OIC, COL Mark Nguyen who carries the U.S. flag.  They're both leading the family and friends, approximately 60 people, to the MHD service area where the OP Teams have completed the setup in the open space outside the church.

It's 1115HRS. The Final Military Honors begin right after the father gives his benediction.  The Color Guards move to its appropriate position.  The Flag Folders take possession of the flag and start folding.  As soon as 1SG Aguilar gives his command, "Firing Detail!  Ready...Aim...Fire...," the audience breaks out in tears.

It's emotional.  It's respectful.  COL Mark Nguyen and CSM Ramil solemnly present the U.S. flag to the next of kin and conclude the ceremony at 1200HRS.
