USV Chaplains make a Courtesy call to the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Washington, DC. -- On May 8, 2008 Chaplain (BG - USAVR) Stephen Kirtley, Chief of Chaplains of the United States Volunteers - Joint Services Command and Dr. Michael McKinney, Deputy Chief of Chaplains (Cmdr USNVR) and President of Promise Christian University made a courtesy call to the Honorable Richard A. Wannemacher, Jr. Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs. They were greeted warmlyand were able to share the vision and mission of the USV-JSC which is "boots on graves," and providing military honors for our nation's veterans. The conversation began with Chaplain Kirtley sharing his reasons for joining and becoming an active member of the USV Chaplain Services under the leadership of LTG Allen Baumann, National Commander. He related the history of the Kirtley family which included a legacy of service to this nation as U.S. Army Chaplains. Mr. Wannemacher expressed his appreciation for all the volunteer organizations, including the USV-JSC that are working within the national cemetery system to provide military honors and he also shared his concern for the lack of chaplains available to provide final services for our nation's veterans. The United States Volunteers - Joint Services Command is working to establish military honor units in all 10 regions of the United States including Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
